Do you ever find yourself getting depressed and remembering the good old days when you were able to indulge in whatever food you craved and desired? How much better would your quality of life be if you didn’t have to constantly stress about having to check every single ingredient on every food label or refrain from dining out because you don’t know what exactly is in the food you order? What if you didn’t have to completely avoid social gatherings because you’re the only one who can’t eat anything that the rest of your friends and loved ones are eating? Have you ever been diagnosed with the mysterious labels of” IBS”, “Celiac Disease”,” Leaky Gut Syndrome”, or “GERD” to name a few? Have you ever cringed at being repeatedly asked that dreaded question, “Why aren’t you eating anything?”
This was me, 19 years ago. I will never forget that awful pain in my stomach; it felt like someone was ripping out my intestines. Fortunately, I discovered one of the top natural medicine doctors in Massachusetts who specialized in Functional Medicine, and I promptly set up an appointment with him. He told me that I most likely had developed food allergies, and recommended that I adopt a hypoallergenic diet for two weeks. At first, I was in complete denial and disbelief about his theory. How could I suddenly become allergic to foods that I had been eating all my life? However, after some thought, I decided to implement this special restricted diet. Still, I highly doubted that I was going to feel any better. Then, lo and behold, my stomach pain, headaches, chronic fatigue, digestive distress, and joint pain completely disappeared! That was official confirmation that I indeed was sensitive to many foods. Did this mean that I ultimately had to avoid these foods for the rest of my life?
I set up a second appointment with my doctor, and needless to say, I was not at all optimistic about walking into his office. I was mostly afraid of the unknown and the prospect of having to give up all the foods that I once enjoyed. I started off by telling him that I honestly did feel better after starting the diet. However, I was on the verge of tears as I waited to hear what he would say in response. He told me to slowly incorporate one food at a time back into my diet to see if it produced a reaction. I was fearful of having an adverse reaction to all the foods that were considered to be possible allergens.
I went home that day after the appointment, and the first food that I added back into to my diet was milk. I instantly knew dairy was one of my problematic foods; my stomach pains returned with a vengeance. The same thing happened with gluten, soy, wheat, corn, eggs and the other foods that had been creating issues. It turned out that I had become allergic to most of the foods that weren't on the hypoallergenic diet. Tears streamed down my face when I thought about not being able to enjoy these foods ever again.
Next came the follow-up appointment with my Functional Medicine doctor, and I sadly recounted all of the foods that had caused a reaction this time around. He advised me to avoid these foods for six whole months, then once again reintroduce them to my diet. He told me that after omitting these foods for this specific amount of time, I might stop reacting to them completely, or at least be able to occasionally tolerate them in small amounts. Achieving optimum health was of utmost importance to me, therefore I religiously kept these foods out of my diet for the entire 6 months. Unfortunately, this meant not dining out at any restaurants whatsoever, due to the possibility of cross-contamination. For this entire time, I was completely miserable because I could no longer enjoy my favorite foods. However, I stuck with it and did not cheat even once with these “forbidden” foods. I was dead set on reclaiming my health.
However, to my dismay, when I resumed the consumption of the allergenic foods after 6 months, I was still reacting! As time went on, I became allergic to an alarming number of foods. My life felt like it was in a never-ending downward spiral. It had reached a point where I could only eat a handful of foods. I will never forget just staring into the depths of the kitchen cabinet, practically sobbing because I just could not eat anything. My diet at that point consisted of pumpkin seeds, turkey, a couple of nut butters, rice crackers, and a hypoallergenic nutritional drink that prevented me from becoming malnourished.
My life revolved around going to my local health food store and doing extensive research to find out the underlying cause of my health problems. I was determined to get to the root of it all. After endless trial and error, and no real results after trying a multitude of natural supplements and literally spending thousands of dollars, I finally found the answer I was seeking. The breakthrough I experienced came from my discovery of innovative nutritional therapy to correct the imbalance in my gut (that pathogens cannot develop a resistance to which prevents allergy recurrence) in combination with getting desensitized with an all natural innovative modality that clears allergens. Miraculously, I have been allergy-free for 19 years and I have never had a recurrence of my sensitivities. My current goal is to help others conquer their food sensitivities/intolerances as efficiently as possible.
